And what are the leotard-clad protagonists of superhero movies but updated versions of the heroes panegyrized by the skalds and griots? Fantasy, to which I’ve dedicated untold numbers of hours reading and writing about, is more successful than I could ever have imagined forty-odd years ago when I first read The Hobbit, and yet I’ve found my taste for it diminishing with each passing year.Įxcellent and original work is being created, but you have to hunt for it. Witness the gargantuan force of A Song of Ice and Fire, both in print and on the screen. If all goes well, I’ll even go for The Worm Ouroboros and The Manuscript Found in Saragossa, too.įantasy has become a successful commodity. So far, my planned reading includes Gormenghast, The Last Unicorn, Once Upon a Time, The Ship of Ishtar, Melmoth the Wanderer, and Frankenstein. My reach will extend at least as far back as the Gothic novels first appearing in the late 18th century, and I hope it will come forward to today. Because of Lin Carter’s magnificent taste, it may at times seem I’m simply going through titles from his Ballantine Adult Fantasy series, but my goal is to rummage around in the basement and attic of fantasy, exploring works that preceded, or exist outside of, modern commercial fantasy. Each first Friday of the month I’ll be writing about a work of fantasy I’ve never read (or read only once a long time ago I insist on room for maneuvering!). Occasionally, an interesting deviation within the big budget nu-metal horror trend would amount to something novel ( Final Destination, The Craft, The Faculty, Valentine) but it’s a genre that’s more so typified by slickly produced, routine dreck ( I Know What You Did Last Summer, Disturbing Behavior, Urban Legend, Halloween: Resurrection). Wes Craven reinvigorated the horror movie industry with Scream in the mid-90s, unwittingly giving birth to a new wave of slick, big-budget, teen-marketed monstrosities with nu-metal tie-in soundtracks that festered on the big screen until the (even worse) trends of found footage cheapies & torture-porn gross-outs took over a decade later. From the top down, it’s such a great time for horror cinema, big-budget & small, that it’s difficult to remember how grim the genre was looking in not-too-distant memory. People often ask if I’ve always wanted to be a writer. I don’t know where I’ll end up, but I’ll keep you posted. I like to think that home is where your heart and soul, your dog, your laptop, your highest heels, and your most treasured books are.Īs an adult, I’ve lived in lots of cities, too: Chicago, New York City, Washington, D.C., Jacksonville (again), Athens, Georgia, and Avignon, France. My family moved a lot when I was young, though, and I’ve called lots of cities home: Atlanta, Georgia Raleigh, North Carolina Alexandria, Virginia Wayne, Pennsylvania and last, but not least, Jacksonville. I call it home, since I braved seventh through twelfth grades there (I think this is the part where I give a shout out to Episcopal High School). So that means you’re stuck reading the traditional kind of bio. And I think I was absent on haiku day in English class. Here’s the problem: I’m not from Nantucket. Or maybe even a haiku (as in, Desperate writer/pens a terrible bio/really bad idea). Like a limerick (as in, There once was a girl from Nantucket/Who wrote a bad bio, then chucked it). Since most bios are beyond boring and slightly narcissistic, I was hoping to find a creative yet humble way to make myself sound more exciting than I actually am. The cute, popular girl who attended the same junior high as Kazehaya and who befriends Sawako in an instant however readers may recognise her from previous volumes and may have a cloud of doubts. Preparation for the sports festival also ensues and things get awkward between Kazehaya and Sawako as she notices her quickened heart beat around Kazehaya. At this point and in the following chapters, Sawako only begins to realise that her 'like' for Kazehaya is different than her 'like' for Ayane and Chizu. Chizu and Ayane are quick to see that Sawako is developing feelings for Kazehaya but (and I'm so grateful for this) they let the relationship take its own course and decide to watch from the sidelines. So this volume follows on from the last Sawako has finally made her first friends and now they're actually doing 'friend-things': hanging out and eating together. Gifs and minor spoilers for this volume too. Plus, his relationship with his former assistant is more fraught than it ever has been - Robin is now invaluable to Strike in the business, but their personal relationship is much, much more tricky than that. But before Strike can question him further, Billy bolts from his office in a panic. Categories: Mystery, Thriller & Suspense. ©2018 Robert Galbraith Limited (P)2018 Hachette Audio. One of the best things Deep has going for it is, despite its size, the story starts off like a relay racer hearing a starter shot. So, is this modern classic worth your time? Is the reprint something to look forward to? The answers are a resounding yes, so let’s dive into what makes this book popular.Ī Fire Upon the Deep, on top of being written by an author with one of the coolest names ever, is an epic science-fiction story that explores a galaxy-spanning conflict that is being determined through medieval warfare on an unmapped planet. At the same time, it is highly regarded as one of the best science fiction novels to come out in the last 30 years. While it is not a golden age sci-fi, missing the era by about 50 years, it definitely feels like a tribute to the great classics. A Fire Upon the Deep, by Vernor Vinge, is a 1992 sci-fi modern classic that is getting a re-release this year from Tor. Riveting, highly suspenseful and action packed!
